First swim back home in Auckland this morning and look what I saw near the tree where I stash my gear … a reasonably-sized stingray. (That’s my cap on the rock for scale.)

Please tell me that was not at a beach near me Peter.
Please.
:/
I know right? Surprised me too!
Sorry, it’s Mellons Bay.

Dead or alive?
Oh, very much alive! And, I guess, perplexed at the predicament it was in — stuck behind a low concrete barrier between ‘my’ tree and the open water, with the tide going out. It had enough water to swim and move around.
I thought at first it must have been stranded by accident, but it turned out a fisherman just along the beach had earlier snagged it and dragged it in … when I talked to him he was waiting for his mate to come and help him (delicately) man-handle the stingray back into the deeper water to go about its holiday.
I’ve never seen one in Mellons Bay before … well, never noticed one before. And I swim there a lot.

I love a happy ending!
