I was sad to hear this news this afternoon on my way to a exhibition opening at a gallery on the North Shore.
Ralph Hotere was a trail blazer, a visionary … and an artist. RIP

Great man – i’ve been privileged to see unframed examples of his work hanging on a very homely wall in an average NZ house – he gave 3 works away to a Maori family i mixed with. The man is an artistic genius – and along with Hone Tuwhare the Poet … one of the greats.
Here’s hoping Sky or TVNZ do a retrospective doco on his life and work.
Yes, it’s hard to overstate Ralph Hotere’s importance as a NZ artist.
And I agree with you re the comparison with Tuwhare, too.
