Apropos the NZ Herald‘s ham-fisted Waitangi Day ‘Protest-Free News Pages’ effort … did you observe how many meaningful scenes in the video accompanying Aotearoa recorded New Zealanders at protest — Vietnam War, 1981 Springbok Tour, Anti-nuclear ships, Hikoi/land march etc ?
Would the NZ Herald like to airbrush these protests out of our history?
I have tweeted in response to some quite over the top reactions to this, including the bizarre White Power references. What I find ironic is that the Herald have published the exact Band Logo of The Tom Robinson Band..who as far as protests go…make Rik from the Young Ones seem …Conservative. have a google..
Gives me goosebumps, every time.
Yes, it’s a really good song, isn’t it?

Haha yeah — ham-fisted seems accurate.
Sorry, Peter, but the song (well, the band full stop) has always left me cold – never liked the lead singer’s bizarre mangling of half of the lyrics…
Agree though that our National Anthem needs to go – an absolute dirge. Mind you, the Maori version is infinitely nicer to listen and sing along to!
Cheers Jay.
I like the song but it’s clearly not to everyone’s taste, I agree.
Not really a viable candidate for National Anthem, but *great* driving music.
I think we’re stuck with the Anthem we have.
And the flag, for now, too.
