If anything, I underestimated the impact of the iPad when I declared in my January 2010 post iPad? Yeah. OK, probably. Why not?
Yes, I’ll probably get one of these. It looks useful, and some of the applications seem like an improvement. Apple does lead the world in industrial design (the ‘cool’ factor), and this shows it again. …
But I can say I’ve never underestimated the software that Apple’s relentlessly elegant equipment, operating systems, platforms and philosophy would lead to. That aspect, putting tools in bright people’s hands, has been a long game for Apple.
I remember as a kid meeting bright people with a spark in their eyes at the Wellington Apple Users Group in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Possibilities, always possibilities.
Watch this moving (deliberately so, and fair enough) and inspiring video which tells part of the story … featuring people who have the same spark.
It encourages me. It makes me happy.

These sorts if promotions are very moving and certainly put faith back in to the Human Race.
But this has nothing to do with the IPAD or apple.
Give them a Surface, 20 year old laptop. A point and shoot camera.
A baseball an mitt. You will get the same reactions. Shame on you Apple.
I think your comment misses the point.
For me, it’s not about ‘Aw gee shiny!’ reactions or engendering a cargo cult mentality.
For me, it’s about technologists providing a platform for other bright people who want to make a difference.
Are the copywriters, artists and engineers at Apple claiming this as an exclusive thing? No.
It also seems to me, as I tried to explain, Apple’s design sensibilities and aesthetic was and is always so much inspiring (to me) than than the simply mercantile, ‘Church of Market Share’ approach embodied by Microsoft.
Their ‘simple is better’, ‘design is how it works‘ design philosophy, where simple doesn’t mean spartan, and the integrated connectedness of the Apple eco-system — these reduce the struggle of development or use of their products. The app developer tools issued by Apple (and others, obviously) put power in the hands of those of us lower down the geek food chain.

No I see you point.
But you have missed/ignored mine. This has nothing to do with Technology. Apple’s unbelievable (ahem) ‘copied’ ease of use.
Its simply a disgraceful Publicity Stunt.
Here’s real innovation. that does not need cheap PR stunts to keep its Fanboys happy. And truly change the world.
No I am not a Google Fanboy. But I know they are a far more a clever, groundbreaking company than basically all IT companies going around. They copy others sure. But they lead the way in people copying them.
And its here at home.

You must get tired carrying around that chip on your shoulder. – P
No not at all, Its rejuvenating calling BS (fairly). You know like same philosophy of one of your loves Whistleblowing.
What about you carrying around heavy preconceived agendas and then it must be hugely tiring ignoring half of the facts. Then commenting on the half you approve of then slam the other half. Now That sounds tiring.
