What a tosser. Paul Henry does not represent the New Zealand I want to live in, or see reflected on TV.
About our Governor General, Henry the supposed ‘royalist’ asked the Prime Minister this morning
“Is he even a New Zealander?” ”Are you going to choose a New Zealander who looks and sounds like a New Zealander this time?”
So Paul Henry is ignorant, as well as rude and, apparently, racist.
Well said Ben Gracewood:
“Paul Henry’s comment made me very uncomfortable as a New Zealander, and I don’t wish to associate, or be associated with people who make such comments. Although I doubt that my actions will in anyway influence someone such as Paul Henry, I do not wish to appear to condone his perspectives by my inaction.”
Henry’s apology? Worthless.
Lose the bully-boy TVNZ. See also Say goodbye to Paul Henry the abusive try-hard including this comment from Brian Edwards.

John Drinnan: ‘Don’t blame the monkey, blame the organ grinder’
“It’s one thing to be entertainingly offensive – another to state that some racial groups have no right to hold the country’s highest office.
…. And why does TVNZ put so much time and energy talking to Redneck New Zealand?”

Personally I like Paul Henry I think his honesty is refreshing and he’s far from ignorant as many media outlets are stating, I would bet Paul Henry is far more intelligent than most broadcasters on Tele and most in the Media. Mind you being smarter than the media is not difficult.
However listening to the interview and reading most of the criticism is all justified, he has gone too far here, most of his controversial comments have a humorous angle to them and most of the public need to grow a sense of humour. But this was not funny very rude with no substance. I believe after winning his recent award (well deserved by the way) he’s now being a bit cocky.
Here’s an example of media blowing things out of proportion Brian Edwards who clearly does not like him. By the way Brian would be one of the few who is more intelligent than Paul.
He wrote about his disgust on how Bob Parker got harassed by Paul Henry by stating he’s being like Rudy Giuliani. I watched the interview and I’m sorry he posed the question once! He did not state it all Brian in this case completely blew this out of Proportion and other Media had posed the same question, any way I digress I would not be surprised if this last outburst of Paul’s get’s him in deeper water. Idiot.
Intelligent provocative comment is one thing. This guy Paul Henry has made a habit of acting like an offensive prat — whether he is or not.
Brian Edwards is, I think, delivering a professional critique, and also explaining his view that some statements are so rude or offensive they shouldn’t be expressed except privately (his example: Henry’s suggestion Kiwi SAS soldiers should ‘slit the throats’ of captive Afghanis).
Whether one ‘likes him’ or not, Henry can go too far. He needs to get the message, in my view, that there are limits. Even for a prat.
I see Paul Henry indeed get in deeper water, and he deserved it.
However this is the only incident where he indeed has crossed the line. I am happy this has happened because people can now realise the authorities are watching and will act if justified. All the bleater’s that have asked for this type of action previously need to take a chill pill realise he is a kind of ‘shock jock’ his comments are mainly in jest and for them to grow a sense of humour apparently 25 people turned up too protest calling for him to be sacked, well thousands of NZer’s recently voted in his favour so there is a rough idea of what the people feel.
Peter he is a Prat, but in all cases but yesterday, he spoke the truth and most people have the same views.
My advise go and watch Simon Dallow read from a Teleprompter with the personality of a stone.
…in all cases but yesterday, he spoke the truth and most people have the same views.
‘spoke the truth’? ‘most prople’?
No, I disagree with you. I’m all for a thought-provoking comment or debate on TV … but he has spouted denigrating abuse and other worthless prattle before.
Henry has worn out his welcome, in my view, People’s Choice award or not.
Well I really don’t know what the minority few have against him. People are quick to turn all PC this day and age. Most of time hastily and falsely.
Also on a side note I have seen some calling him a Bigot.
Do they know what it means?
big·ot (bgt)
n.
One who is strongly partial to one’s own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.
Well that is everyone on this planet who has any opinion on any subject. That makes me a bigot because I like chicken.
Yes Peter,
In all the highlighted comments that Paul has stated other than this recent botch up was the truth. And most people have the same feelings/views.
However I’m certainly not claiming that just because someone speaks the truth it means people have the right too go there. And in this latest Paul episode society has stepped in and he’s been rep-remanded.
Schizos, ‘unnatural’ gays, retards and NZ’ers who don’t ‘look or sound like NZ’ers’ (in Paul Henry’s eyes) may disagree with your blanket assertion that he states ‘the truth’.
I have said he doesn’t represent ME.
You’ve said ‘most people’ share his views. Really?

Just because the above statements are controversial does not make them untrue, these don’t necessary reflect my own opinions but they do reflect a lot more peoples opinions than you think. How do I know this, Viewer Numbers Ok all those my not agree with all his diddys but most are not offended.
Do I know this to be fact. No.
But from the amount for people that do enjoy Paul Henry, I can categorically say that is a lot more than the precious few that don’t.
Negative reactions to his rants are always going to get headlines. These are often complaints from just a handful of people.
Yes they are touchy topics and most will not go there.
But this is my point; he is willing to say things most of us are thinking but will not, because of fear.
Your angle on his colleagues stepping away is completely expected and normal, someone who ad-libs on air is always going to get disgruntled peers with left field comments. Geez most people have disgruntled peers at their workplaces around NZ. So what.
Interesting reading Bens Blog there are lot of people in support of his decision, not really surprising since generally Blog have avid followers, what’s more interesting is the number of people who did not agree with his decision.
For the record:

“However, it recognised that the comment [by Andi Brotherston: that most of us quietly think what Henry says] compounded the offence caused.
I like Andi. But that statement was a misjudgement of career-limiting proportions. As she has admitted: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10678615
We DON’T all agree that Paul Henry represents us. That’s the point. -P
TVNZ may have got 1500 complaints and I agree they should of with the Governor General comment. As I stated before his resignation, “he may well get be in deeper water.” And he should be punished.
But for the 1500 complaints I would like to know how many they received in support for him.
Because I have seen several groups in support of Henry, one with 40,000 members.
I agree with your comment that Paul Henry does not represent all of us. But he has more Pro Paul people than Con Paul people.
And personally the only person that represents me is me.
